Born in Barcelona in 1913, the well-known flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya was a tireless force of nature, with a strength and vigour that expressed themselves in her dancing, which surged out of the very depths of her soul. When Carmen came to live in Begur, she already knew that she was ill: she suffered from a congenital kidney malfunction. Her memory remains alive in the Costa Brava, especially in Begur, where she arrived during a period when famous personalities were frequenting our coast and films were being made that turned the Costa Brava into a fashionable spot.
It was Carmen who gave Manel Bisbe the nickname of ‘Gitano’ (Gypsy) of Llafranc. The people of Begur remember her as a very kind and generous person. Her house, Mas Pinc, where she lived with and supported her extensive gypsy family, became famous for the parties she held and the continuous presence of well-known personalities. Carmen Amaya died in Begur in 1963, and nowadays the house displays a collection dedicated to the memory of this extraordinary artist.
