Legend has it that in the times of pirates and corsairs, when our population lived in fear of their attacks, a blood-curdling event took place at the boundaries of Mont-ras. One fine day a ship crewed by pirates dropped anchor in the twin bays of La Fontmorisca and El Crit (The Scream). From there the pirates crept up on the Gall Peric farmhouse and attacked it. The crowing of the cock alerted the inhabitants of the house, who managed to flee, but the pirates were nonetheless to kidnap a very beautiful girl. They pillaged the house and carried off all the objects of value they found, including the damsel. But the girl was not willing to resign herself to her fate and fought tooth and nail right down to the beach. When she saw that the pirates intended to take her aboard the ship, the girl gave the man who was holding her a hard bite; the man, furious, drew his sword and cut her throat. The frightful scream the girl let out resounded around the bay and throughout the entire district. And thus died the poor damsel at the hands of the pirates. The names of the two bays have remained in people’s memory, and they say that still today, from time to time, bathers hear a strange scream but cannot tell where exactly it comes from ... they say, however, that it sounds like the scream of a young girl.
