Just 35 kilometres from the centre of the district of the Baix Empordŕ is Figueres, the capital of the Alt Empordŕ, best known for its Dalí Theatre-Museum.
In recent years, Figueres has extended its range of services with a large commercial area comprising the streets of the town centre, which also contains the Dalí Theatre-Museum, one of the most visited in Catalonia.
The Museum, built over the remains of the old town theatre, was inaugurated in 1974 and displays the widest variety of works from the career of Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), from his first artistic experiments and his creations within Surrealism to the works of the last years of his life.
Port Alguer (1924), The Spectre of Sex Appeal (1932) and Galatea of the Spheres (1952), among others, are some of the illustrious works displayed in the museum.
During July and August, the Dalí Theatre-Museum is open every day of the week. The rest of the year it only closes on 1 January, 25 December and Mondays (excepting public holidays and days before public holidays).
The outing can be completed with a visit to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, situated a short distance from Figueres in the Cap de Creus Natural Park and offering a matchless panorama of the Empordŕ.
